If few people grant
Hautefaye much charm as
a village, or rather a
hamlet counting a dozen
houses or so, tourists with a
taste for the gruesome
should pay a visit.
Hautefaye, situated in the
north of the Dordogne, in le
Nontronnais, a region
densely wooded and dotted
with attractive and sombre
lakes, has come to be known
as the Village of
the Cannibals.
The regrettable incident
which gave Hautefaye this
reputation occurred not so
long ago, on the 16th of
August 1870. France had
been at war with Prussia for
a month. That day, which
was a market day, was to be
remembered for a fit of
nationalistic fever, sustained
by a large intake of home
made alcohol, summer heat
and an excessive passion in
the populace for
Napoleon III.

one million visitors filling
the streets of Béziers for five
days of music, bullfighting,
sports, and regional cuisine.
This years dates are
August 1–15.
Bullfighting is the focus
of the event, and this year
pays tribute to celebrated
Spanish matador Manolete,
who was killed in the ring
in 1947. He is considered to
have put more of an
emphasis into the sport on
