Our golf pros Cédric and Fréd unpack their clubs and test out the rolling fairways of ‘Le Château Neuf’
Located just in between Burgundy and
Alsace lies the ‘Golf-Club du Château de
Bournel’. This beautiful domaine has been
family-owned for the last five centuries. The
clubhouse and hotel, in the château itself,
provide a very unusual and historical setting.
The course was designed by the French
architect Robert Berthet. The holes are carved
in the forest and surround the 18th century
castle ‘Le Château Neuf’. It takes advantage
of a scenic landscape: trees, lakes, sand and
water fountains offering a real pleasure to the
eye as well as a strong golfing challenge.
The place is filled with history and you
feel privileged to play such a course.
Bring your camera.

The Rhône valley route to and from
the main ski slopes is the focus of the
traffic jam predictors in March, along
with a couple of busy days on all
France’s roads expected at Easter.
Around Easter, March 22, red
warnings for departing traffic were
issued for Good Friday and for
returning traffic on Monday.
Such warnings usually mean
hundreds of kilometres of jams build
up on the day.

Brian McCulloch meets the champion of the Battle of the Red Tape.

Roaring around in a 1950s-designed sports car is usually
as British as marmalade, but more of these cars are
likely to be seen soon in France.
Westfield, the makers of one of the cars based on the Lotus
7, has opened a French dealership based at the racing circuit at
Mérignac, Bordeaux.
Unfortunately, torrential rain fell on press day, but a quick
impression from riding in a similar car 20 years ago was of
sitting very low to the ground, bouncing hard over rough roads
and coping with the turning circle of an oil tanker. In addition,
the brakes (like those in most 1950s cars) did not have any
servo assistance, so it took a lot of kick before the car slowed.
Too much kick, though, and the wheels threatened to lock. And
on top of that there was a deafening exhaust.
