Everyone’s talking about the Vélorution… So Carly-Jane Lock decided to take
a look at how what’s set to be the world’s largest self-service bike system is
shaping up two weeks after the long-awaited V-day on July 15.
With queues forming
around every
station, passers-by
with their shopping caddies
in tow, active Parisians and
cycling enthusiasts… it
seems everyone wants a
look-in. Technical hitches at
several of the stations, not
enough bikes to go round or
a shortage of bike docks
around the city for parking
have led to fraught nerves
and disgruntled pedallers.
There are stations every 250
to 300 metres, so finding a
bike or a parking slot isn’t
hard. Drivers haven’t taken
so kindly to the bicycle
invasion, particularly in thick
traffic.

Now in its sixth year, Paris Plage has
established itself as the playground
for Parisians and visitors celebrating
summer in the city.
Parisians aplenty flocked to the
suntrap in July to enjoy a long-overdue
bain de soleil. Visitors have 19 days in
which to roll out their towels at the
city’s pre-fab beach resort and sample
live concerts from artists in association
with FNAC. Leisure activities laid on
from 8am to midnight include taï chi,
volleyball, rollerblading and rugby.

Rare pearls in the shopping
department are to be found
beyond boulevard
Haussmann and towards
Pigalle. Discreet shoe legend
Karine Arabian’s boutique is
filled with an enchanting
range of dancehall -inspired
heels and soft suede ankle
boots. Fit for modern day
divas de Pigalle à la Edith
Piaf, mixing leather and
patent with a metallic finish
– these shoes have been the
Achilles’ heel of many a
fashionista.
