Everyone’s talking about the Vélorution… So Carly-Jane Lock decided to take a look at how what’s set to be the world’s largest self-service bike system is shaping up two weeks after the long-awaited V-day on July 15.

With queues forming around every station, passers-by with their shopping caddies in tow, active Parisians and cycling enthusiasts… it seems everyone wants a look-in. Technical hitches at several of the stations, not enough bikes to go round or a shortage of bike docks around the city for parking have led to fraught nerves and disgruntled pedallers. There are stations every 250 to 300 metres, so finding a bike or a parking slot isn’t hard. Drivers haven’t taken so kindly to the bicycle invasion, particularly in thick traffic.

Now in its sixth year, Paris Plage has established itself as the playground for Parisians and visitors celebrating summer in the city.
Parisians aplenty flocked to the suntrap in July to enjoy a long-overdue bain de soleil. Visitors have 19 days in which to roll out their towels at the city’s pre-fab beach resort and sample live concerts from artists in association with FNAC. Leisure activities laid on from 8am to midnight include taï chi, volleyball, rollerblading and rugby.

Christelle, who runs this charming Italian trattoria along with her brother-in-law and an Italian chef, has great plans for Chez Tito. New display counters and authentic hardwood flooring are all on the agenda, she tells me over coffee.
