As part of their nationwide
‘Astounding France’
campaign, Galeries Lafayette
in Biarritz has devoted part
of the shop floor to an
exhibition celebrating the
diversity of contemporary art
and that of yesteryear. Hand
made bags, shoes and hats
from the 50’s reflect the
glamour of that era and sit
alongside modern portraits,
sculptures and textiles, which
have been created by artists
living and working in the
area.
Biarritz-Bonheur art
organisation founder and
exhibition curator, the artist
Jean-Loup Bezos said: “I
wanted to reflect the univers
francais with a collection
mixing old and new.” Store
director Anne Rousselle
summed up the show:
“French, fun and fabulous.”
Until October 6. www.biarritzbonheur.fr Galeries Lafayette 17, place

Every autumn, more
than 20,000 people
pour into the Basque
village Espelette to take part
in a giant Pepper Party, a fête
to celebrate the harvest of
the shiny green, sweet and
spicy Espelette pepper.
Pepper producers faced a
particularly difficult season
this year. Starting with
strong rains in spring which
meant the crops should have
been planted too early, the
humid summer was
unsuitable for the sensitive
tropical-origin plant. “The
excess of water drowns the
roots and the pepper dies”,
said Ramuntxo Olhagaray
president of the syndicat of
the AOC Piment d’Espelette.

For years the porc
basque was on the way
out. A pink pig with
black spots, it thrived over
the centuries in the narrow
villages of the French
Basque country, until the
onset of mechanised
farming. With such modern
techniques as centrally
heated piggeries, the porc
basque, with its long narrow
hams and medium size lost
out to the giant porc blanc,
the standard white pig found
all over Europe.
That might have been
that, had a farm boy from
one of the valley of the
Aldudes, who had gone off
to Paris to train as a highclass
butcher, not returned
home.

Local driver Anicet
Garocoix was a
popular winner of the
51st Rallye des Cimes.
The rally began in 1951
when Sauveur Bouchet
realised just how much fun
could be had taking
American jeeps off-road.
Bouchet and several
friends created the now
annual event, which takes
place in the mountains in the
Soule area of the
Pays Basque.
Garicoix dominated from
the start to win the race with
François Hirogoyen in
second place. Twelve
English teams were among
the 94 starters and six were
left among the 41 finishers.
