French President Sarkozy has been pushing the idea of Tony Blair as the first
President of the European Union. George Bush sees him more in the role of
roving EU rep, particularly in the troubled Middle East
President Sarkozy has
discussed the idea of
a President of the
European Union with various
leaders, notably Angela
Merkel, the six-monthly
President of Europe until
June 30.
French diplomats say that he would
be good for the job because he has the
high profile on the world stage that
Europe needs.

If not, you could find yourself in serious trouble with the taxman!
‘French News’ received the reader’s letter below at the beginning of June. Although my
June article touched on the subject of the UK’s Offshore Disclosure Facility, this letter is a
reminder of how important it is for everyone to be fully aware of all their tax obligations in
France and the UK (or wherever their home country is). I therefore thought I should spend
more time explaining why the HM Revenue and Customs initiative came about and the
importance of getting your tax affairs right.

One of the first tax-related decisions of the Sarkozy government
is likely to be to impose taxes on USB keys, memory cards and
external hard discs. The tax, already applied to blank CDs, tapes
and DVDs is meant to compensate musicians for pirated music
but musicians’ unions complain their members see none of it.
When the proposals receive the presidential signature,
probably in mid July, the tax on a 160GB external hard disc will
be around €6.45.

It may not seem like it but the amount of alcohol drunk by
people in France is dropping. Beer sales have dropped 25% in 25
years, and wine producers in some parts of the country are
threatening terrorist action as their cheap and nasty wine has
become unsellable.

Although the delays to the A380 have hogged the headlines,
another important aeronautic project by an EADS subsidiary is
in trouble. Naval versions of the NH90 helicopter are already
two years late, and now it looks as though the first will only be
delivered in 2009.
