Laure Manaudou

Landel, the luxury
accessory brand, has
recently launched a
handbag collection
inspired by the 20-
year-old swimming
champ. The bags
are lilaccoloured
and
have a
butterflyshaped
design
that
matches
the tattoo on
Manaudou’s back. The Olympic gold
medallist recently moved to Turin to be
closer to her boyfriend, Italian swimmer
Lucas Marin. The separation from her trainer
Phillipe Lucas last May, just a year away
from the Beijing Olympic Games, received
considerable media coverage. She is now
training at the LaPresse swimming club, and
it is likely that she will travel to Mexico next
September to train in high altitude.
Amélie Mauresmo
After the French team’s defeat in Italy at the
Fed Cup semifinals held in Castellaneta
Marina (Italy), tennis player Amélie
Mauresmo has decided to take a break from
the sport. She is planning to go on a boat trip
for at least two weeks, and it is uncertain
whether she will compete in the US Open.
Didier Deschamps
The captain of the French team in the 1998
World Cup is on the market for a new job
after resigning from his post as coach of
Juventus last May. Although there has been
talk of offers from Lens, Manchester, Bilbao
and Bordeaux the 38-year-old veteran has not
yet confirmed anything. Didier played on six
teams in France, Italy, the UK and Spain
from 1985 to 2001, and coached the AS
Monaco for four years after his retirement
from professional football.

Le Golf du Coudray in
Essonnes is a
wonderful course just
30 minutes from Paris. Built
in 1960 on ancient royal
grounds, the course was
designed by Charles K.
Cotton. The layout is carved
through the Rougeau forest
and provides a very
traditional 18-hole course
(Les Marronniers)
demanding precision and
good playing strategy.
Later on in the 1970s,
another nine holes (La
Guiche) were added.
The club house, designed
by architect Henri Pottier
(winner of the Grand Prix de
Rome) combines a unique
style with all the modern
facilities. The bar-restaurant
is open untill 3pm. The
service is vprofessional and
the food excellent, with
menus from €15 to €30. The
terrace is a peaceful place to
eat and enjoy the views over
the course.

Late in his second term,
President Mitterrand
was approached by
what passes in France for an
investigative journalist. He
was asked whether it was
true that he had both a
mistress and a daughter by
her. His reply, laconic as
ever, was “Et alors?”
meaning, So what? or What’s
it to do with you?
Yet on French cricket
fields that same phrase is
uttered umpteen times every
match: “Et alors!” Except
that, here, it’s “Howzat?”
So, what’s been
happening recently on the
cricket fields?
Bordeaux cruised,
predictably, to the
championship title in the
Aquitaine division of the
Barclays League, but not
without finally losing a
game, against Angoulême.
But what a game! Playing
only with seven players,
Bordeaux saw Angoulême
knock up 260 runs through
all the gaps; Bordeaux’s
happy few then went on to
score 249 before being all
out with 10 balls of the
match remaining, Hugo
Pinsent scoring exactly 100.
Eymet have finished
runners-up, a mere two
points ahead of Damazan
and a further three ahead of
Angoulême. After a very
difficult season, Saint-
Aulaye finished fifth, but in
reality not too much adrift in
terms of points.

Many islands cling to the Poitou coast – Lindsay
Woodster visits the smallest in a horse-drawn calèche.
For an exciting breath of the sea
and a different perspective on the
coast, visit the Île Madame. It’s
the tiniest of the islands at the mouth of
the Charente, 1km long and 600m wide,
well worth the walk to it at low tide
along the Passe aux boeufs (ox path).
Unfortunately, you can take a car
onto the island, but during the month of
August there is the particular charm of
going there en calèche – in a horsedrawn
carriage.
Hirondelle, a magnificent 13-yearold
Percheron, and her son Marquis,
can spirit you across the pale ribbon of
sand and pebbles that creates the
extension to the Port des Barques for
some hours when the sea withdraws
each day. They pull their carriage round
the single road of the island, and you
can drop off or join them en route.
Take the whole trip for an hourand-
a-half, and enjoy in comfort the
distant views of the other islands,
the wide mouth of the river and the
mudflats which create its particular
ambiance.

At the live horse museum (Musée
Vivant du Cheval), dedicated to
equine arts and culture, mainly Spanish
and Portuguese horse breeds are on
show but in all some 10 breeds are
represented: Friesians, one German
Oldenburg, Welsh and Shetland ponies,
a Marwari horse – the only Indian horse
visible in Europe – and a donkey... All
of them were bought in their countries
of origin and brought to the museum,
which attracts some 160,000 visitors
every year.
On the first Sunday of each month,
riders – they all happen to be women –
and horses become actors in a show
called ‘Rêve et poésie’ (Dream and
Poetry).
