Is there a French equivalent
of the UK’s Insurance
Ombudsman, as I would like
to make a complaint about
my house insurers?
Last year, rain water
came in through the roof of
my bungalow. The builders
made a watertight repair
under the 10-Year
Construction Guarantee, but
the damage meant
redecoration was needed. My
house insurers Gan
Assurance arranged for an
expert to assess the damage
and its cause. His report,
copied to the builders, stated
that the builders were the
liable party.

I lived near Perpignan last year for six months and bought a
French car, which I insured for a year with AXA. I left the
car with a local garage to be sold and returned to England.
They eventually sold it in June this year.
Today I had a letter forwarded from AXA demanding more
than €600 for the next year’s insurance, as my insurance had
run out in February. I rang them today to explain that I had no
responsibility for it, and it would probably be under the
insurance of the garage (as it would be in England). I didn’t say
it was no business of theirs (in England we change our insurers
when we feel like it).

Diana James warns how to prepare for and relieve the scourge of harvest mites – at least for your pets.
This time of year, we vets often see cats
and dogs in the clinic suffering from
tremendous itchiness. The culprit may
be the harvest mite or aoûtat (Trombicula
autumnalis). It also goes under the name of
Chiggers.
It is the six-legged larva which causes
such discomfort to cats and dogs during the
late summer and autumn. The mite is
particularly abundant in chalky areas and
gardens where soft fruit is grown. The
infestations can be sharply localised, and only
one or two gardens in a village may be
affected. The larval stage is the only parasitic
stage of the life cycle.

A new decree was published in the ‘Journal Officiel’ on
August 4, hardening up the rules for chambres d’hôtes.
Owners have until the end of December to declare their
activity at the mairie, stating the name of the
owner/occupant, the address, the capacity and rental periods
of the chambres. Chambres d’hôtes owners may not offer
more than five rooms or welcome more than 15 people at any
one time.
