The government’s plan for a rise in TVA in order to scratch out a couple of the lines on French payslips was widely judged to have been a factor in the Socialist’s relative success in the parliamentary elections.
In the aftermath, Laurence Parisot, Chairman of the largest French bosses’ union, Medef, pleaded with the government not to shelve the idea: “If politicians approach this sort of subject with demagogic arguments they will not help us to understand the economic reasoning behind the proposals,” said Mme Parisot, who runs a business near Agen making folding and sliding doors.

Reinforcement of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s report of earlier this year came in June with the UN’s publication of the ‘Global Outlook for Ice and Snow’. The document has been put together by 70 experts worldwide as part of International Polar Year.

Bears
This spring, despite misery among bearlovers when only two introduced females in the French Pyrenees emerged from hibernation, there was jubilation when Hvala swaggered out with two babies. These bears are of Slovenian stock and are part of a programme to reintroduce brown bears, which have had a troubled history with humans.

• Education is compulsory in Europe but BBC, ITV, FREE TO AIR, SKY, ETC. not in at least 25 countries of the world On average compulsory education lasts 10 years in Europe but the Hungarians suffer the longest, having to attend for 13 years, followed by the UK and the Netherlands with 12.
