Dear Editor,
With reference to Mr Porteus’s mystery
“submarine-sonar” bird call (Q&A,
August), it very much depends on what
you interpret as “sonar on a submarine”
sound. Having just watched ‘The Cruel
Sea’ again, I think the sound is like a
ping repeated at regular intervals.
If you can imagine a ping as a soft
beeping noise then the mystery bird is
almost certainly a Scops Owl. This
small owl (20cm long) calls in this way
at regular intervals of about three
seconds. The sound carries for a long
distance and can go on for a long time.
The bird is very difficult to see. My
bird book says the sound is similar to
the midwife toad, but deeper, so the
three-second interval could be the
clincher.

Is it now possible to register a vehicle in France without
changing it over to French plates (ie, keeping the UK ones)?
Also, would you know where I can get advice on being an
HGV driver in France, specifically if I’ve passed my Class 1
in England? Is there anything else I need to pass in order to
seek employment in France?

Dearest readers of French News,
Your response to our question above (February issue) was
overwhelming. However, there were questions with regard to
the bird’s beak. We began to doubt if it was long and
upturned.
Recently I visited my dear mother in Coventry, England.
Guess what? Mum had saved us an article from a famous
tabloid, with the heading: “Why Freaky Beaky is feeling
peaky” [Daily Mail, March 29, 2007, about a bluetit with a
long hooked beak].

Dear Editor,
I feel saddened and ashamed by the actions of a few ex-UK
immigrants in the Dordogne. Having chosen to live in an
idyllic wooded region in the most civilised country in Europe,
they apparently feel free to kill, maim and persecute some
cats which live and find refuge in the woods. Their coup de
grace is to deposit their dead trophies on a particular
dwelling's doorstep.

Dear Madam,
You have totally missed the point of the
photo on page 45 (August issue). The whole
object was to record the work of the waterbomber
in relation to the conflagration; you
failed even to mention the aerial missions of
the Sécurité civile.
The photo is remarkable because it
catches in action five aircraft simultaneously
(CL415s): a) descending towards the lake
(two); b) picking up water from the surface
with their hull scoops (one) and c) climbing
away with their loads towards the scene of
the fire (two). Note that the A8 ‘highway’ in
the caption should be rendered as A for
autoroute, or motorway in English.
