The president of Réseau ferré de France (RFF) Michel Boyon,
confirmed in May in Saint-Malo that the high-speed rail link
between Le Mans and Rennes, that will put Brest and Quimper at
three hours from Paris, will be completed by 2012 or 2013. The
improvements to the rail lines will allow the TGV to run at 200-
220km/hr instead of the 160km/hr it currently reaches.

A new Flybe service operating between Rennes and Exeter
opened on May 8. Demand for a regular service has existed for
years. Rennes and Exeter were officially twinned in 1957, after
a series of exchanges between the town’s universities.

Not only have dozens of McDonald’s sprouted all over the
west of France over the last few years but also some more
exotic fast-food competitors. A recent case involving a supplier
of 15 kebab restaurants in Rennes, Brest, Quimper, Nantes,
Vannes and Lorient has hit the news, spoiling local appetite for
such snacks. In March 2005, the veterinary services in the
Morbihan discovered no less than 545kg of putrid meat
seemingly intended for regional kebab restaurants.

A 62-year-old Englishman has been remanded in custody in
Rennes prison since April 12. Customs officers in Cherbourg
arrested him after they found 13kg of cannabis resin in his
van. He had driven up through France with a load mostly
comprised of computer equipment from Malaga in Spain.
