The charismatic founder of the Confédération Paysanne, altermondialiste and major activist in the debate against genetically modified (GM) foods, José Bové, is to start a hunger strike on January 3, at an unspecified place in Paris and under the noses of the Head of State and his ministers.
The reason? What he sees as a major deception has been carried out by the government. Public demand registered through last year’s environment summit was for a halt to the dissemination of GM products. The illusion that a sexy French TV show was ever ‘real’ has been stripped away in the High Court in Paris after participants claimed they were employees of the show. ‘L’Île aux tentations’ was a télé réalité programme on TF1, exposing the amorous adventures of a group of four attractive young couples hidden away on a luxurious desert island. The highly popular programme tested if they could resist the temptations of illicit love or, more to the point, for how long.
The President of the court was regaled with videos containing torrid enticements to viewers such as “Voilà Long Island, the beach for men and six creatures to turn their heads. Will Anthony betray Vanessa? Will Marie resist?” The short answers were “yes” and “no – or at any rate not for long”. The case revolves not around the gyrations of Antony and Marie but technical matters of employment law. ‘L’Île aux tentations’, far from being spontaneous as represented to the viewers, was heavily rehearsed and its participants employed as actors, it was alleged.
