Carrefour bought Plus, one of its hard-discount rivals in
Spain, for €200 million and said it would merge the 250
stores into its Dia brand, the Spanish version of Ed stores in
French cities.
Plus made a “small loss” last year, said Carrefour, but it
said it was confident this could be turned around by using its
sophisticated logistics and buying platforms.

Air France confirmed that it was interested in bidding with
the private equity firm Apex for the Spanish airline Iberia.
The move puts it in conflict with British Airways who saw a
bid of €3.60 a share rejected by the board of Iberia.
For Air France, which four years ago bought the Dutch
airline KLM, the main attractions of Iberia are its routes to
South America and its hub airport in Madrid. Both Paris and
Amsterdam, the company’s main hubs at the moment, are
approaching saturation point.

France continues to be a popular place
for people to move to from the UK.
According to new research from the
Bank of Scotland International, almost half
of Britons are interested in buying property
or moving abroad, France being the favourite
European destination. Many of those moving
here do so on their retirement, preferring to
spend their well-earned years of leisure in
France rather than the UK. Most people who
have already made the move fully understand
the attraction and very much enjoy their new
life in France.
Different people approach retirement with
different emotions. Some don’t look forward
to it, worrying about having nothing to do
with their time. Others eagerly anticipate
having the leisure to do whatever they please.
They may have a list of pastimes they want to
take up, lifetime ambitions they haven’t had
time to pursue yet, or simply a desire to spend
more time outdoors, enjoying the climate and
adopting the French pace of life.
