Common Milkwort –
Polygala vulgaris –
just an udder plant?

Jokingly I call the plant ‘the tricolor’ because
it comes in the three colours of the French
flag. The milkworts – there are several
species – are common in May (this year in
April).

Tree mallows or lavatera arborea – lavatère
in French – are not tree-like but splendid
shrubs, known for their generosity of flowers
on their wispy branches. They are deciduous,
belong to the malvaceae family and are named
after the Zurich physician Lavater.

For many, the expression ‘disability’ conjures up visions of
elderly wheelchair-bound people but the word covers many
other conditions and age groups, each with its own basic
needs. For people facing disability after years of living an ablebodied
life there can be a feeling of loss, especially if they
enjoyed sports. With a little research, you can still meet those
needs and enjoy a relaxing or even an adventure holiday like
everyone else.

Orléans’ annual jazz festival has welcomed the
Gotan Project and even Miles Davis. Festival
director Stéphane Kochoyan, an award-winning
jazz pianist, says this 16th year will also
showcase young new talent.
