Forest fires are a regular occurrence in most parts of Provence
but they are mostly confined to the more densely forested
areas of the hinterland. It is rare for seaside tourists to be
directly affected by them.
However, in early July a blaze broke out close to the
resorts of Mandelieu and Théoules-sur-Mer. Aided by winds
of up to 90km/h which rapidly changed direction, the fire
spread quickly and ended up covering more than
1,500 hectares.

If you like lazing on the
sand, for free, go to the
Boulevard de Strasbourg
until August 19, where a
beach and a ranch delights
the tourists in Lille. There
are three pools to play
around in, one reserved for
swimmers, another for
beginners, a baby pool, aquagym
with water polo sessions
and water sports. Then you
can go for a ride at the ranch,
where there are free outdoor
activities.

The association Opale
Link was founded in
April 2006. It aims at
improving the economic,
social and cultural links
between the south east of
England and the north of
France – particularly the
Opale Coast.
It was founded out of the
frustration of witnessing very
high levels of
unemployment, poverty and
a stagnant economy in the
region around Calais, and the
low unemployment, and high
economic growth in Kent and
London, only a few
kilometres away.

Asport
that dates
back to 1930
and that is practised mainly
in Australia and South
Africa, polocrosse
is
now
popular in
the Somme Bay.
Similar to polo, it is
played on horseback in teams
of three on a pitch roughly
the size of a football field.
However, the polocrosse
players use not sticks, but
racquets similar to those
employed in lacrosse. The
latex ball is scooped up in
the net at the end of the
racquet and passed among
players to score a goal.
