Forest fires are a regular occurrence in most parts of Provence but they are mostly confined to the more densely forested areas of the hinterland. It is rare for seaside tourists to be directly affected by them.
However, in early July a blaze broke out close to the resorts of Mandelieu and Théoules-sur-Mer. Aided by winds of up to 90km/h which rapidly changed direction, the fire spread quickly and ended up covering more than 1,500 hectares.

If you like lazing on the sand, for free, go to the Boulevard de Strasbourg until August 19, where a beach and a ranch delights the tourists in Lille. There are three pools to play around in, one reserved for swimmers, another for beginners, a baby pool, aquagym with water polo sessions and water sports. Then you can go for a ride at the ranch, where there are free outdoor activities.

The association Opale Link was founded in April 2006. It aims at improving the economic, social and cultural links between the south east of England and the north of France – particularly the Opale Coast.
It was founded out of the frustration of witnessing very high levels of unemployment, poverty and a stagnant economy in the region around Calais, and the low unemployment, and high economic growth in Kent and London, only a few kilometres away.

For the first time in Picardie, 100 people aged between 16 and 25 are off on an independent holiday thanks to Operation SacAdos, launched by the conseil régional. The scheme also runs in the Essonne, Aquitaine and Seine-et-Marne.

Asport that dates back to 1930 and that is practised mainly in Australia and South Africa, polocrosse is now popular in the Somme Bay. Similar to polo, it is played on horseback in teams of three on a pitch roughly the size of a football field. However, the polocrosse players use not sticks, but racquets similar to those employed in lacrosse. The latex ball is scooped up in the net at the end of the racquet and passed among players to score a goal.
