Of all the edible fungi, the truffle stands in a
class of its own, the black diamond of
French gastronomy. Its pungent aroma is at
its peak from mid January – the season of
fairs and prizes. Sarah Weston sniffs out
the competition.
The mayor of Martel declared the
19th annual truffle market open.
It was a Saturday in mid-January,
and the middle of a good season.
Crowds of people spilled into the hall
where some two dozen purveyors were
waiting with their black diamonds, as
they are nicknamed, displayed without
fuss in small baskets on red check
tablecloths. Business opened at €700;
deals could be clenched with cash only.
A lot of €50 notes changed hands.

It was on February 11, 1858, that the poor country girl Bernadette
Soubirous saw the first of 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary in a cave
in Lourdes. Bernadette was not generally believed at first and suffered
many enquiries by the Church before it accepted her visions. After
some miraculous recoveries it was thought by some that the spring
water from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes possessed healing
properties, making Lourdes a place of hope for the sick and disabled.
Since then, the small market town has become one of the main
pilgrimage destinations for Christians around the world.
An estimated eight million pilgrims are expected to travel to France
to commemorate this 150th anniversary.

Véronique Minozzo has tested the EU
Soho Solo project.
The Small Office Home
Office project (hence
Soho Solo) aims to help selfemployed
professionals relocate
to country areas hit by
the rural exodus.
Five years later, the
scheme has achieved its
objective. In the Gers, I am
one of the 148 Soho Solos
registered and our numbers
are still growing. They are
spread over 90 different
villages, boosting demand
and activity in areas which
were doomed to
depopulation.
