A unique new event to help English-speakers settle into their lives and work

New in town and looking to start a
business in the Dordogne? Don’t
know where to begin? Whether
you are opening your business, already
running one or simply settling down in
the region, ‘Success in the Dordogne’
hopes to make the transition from
foreigner to French resident a bit easier.
On April 4 and 5, ‘Success in the
Dordogne’ will gather representatives
from key areas of French life to offer
free advice and information in English,
all in one convenient location. You can
learn about business development, the
French taxation system, banking,
insurance and legislation. There will be
seminars on administrative formalities
involved with living in France, support
structures in the Dordogne and more.

Hazel Francis joins the twitchers craning their necks to admire the flying formations of these huge migrants.

On a pleasant Sunday afternoon,
bird lovers of all ages from the
Gironde area joined up to make
the most of the sunshine and observe
cranes. The French bird protection
society, Ligue Protection Des Oiseaux
Aquitaine, (LPO) organised the day’s
outing in association with the Parc
Régional des Landes de Gascogne.
As well as observation, Yann
Toutain, the LPO’s director of activities,
led seminars about the cranes, their
biology and evolution, mating rituals,
feeding habits and hibernation routine.

As the only
international and
bilingual school in
Southwest France, Bordeaux
International School (BIS)
celebrates its 20th
anniversary on April 12. First
opening its doors in 1988,
the school has grown from a
small centre for sixth-form
studies to a fully-fledged
school serving children aged
two and a half to 19.
The school follows the
British education system,
while integrating lessons on
French language and culture.
In fact, primary school
students divide their time
between French- and
English-led classes until age
12, when they begin to focus
more strictly on the English
national curriculum with
older students taking the
English IGCSE and A level
examinations.

Retiring Chairman Tony Edwards handing over to Beryl Dennett Stannard with the Branch Standard as a backdrop.
At le Pian-Medoc, among the world-famous Médoc
vineyards, the 39 ‘fine and mature’ English and French
members of the Royal Air Forces Association Sud-Ouest
France who attended the AGM at the end of January voted in
their first ever Chairwoman. After the AGM formalities, a
four-course luncheon with local wines was enjoyed by all.
The RAFA Dedication was cited in both French and English
and the lives of five members who died in 2007 were
remembered. The speaker at the lunch was Dick Taplin, a
former Branch Chairman while serving in the RAF at
Mérignac on the Jaguar aircraft project.
The Branch seems set fair for another busy year under the
Stewardship of Beryl and her new Committee.
