Bordeaux is France's most pleasant city, according to a survey publishedin May. According to the survey carried about by national estate agents' group ORPI, 32% of residents in Bordeaux interviewed found their city to be "more than pleasant". This was the highest figure in the survey, with Biarritz/Bayonne, Lyon and Paris following respectively. Shockingly, the national average was almost half the percentage of Bordeaux's, at 19%.
It would seem that Bordeaux's 'pleasantness' reflected in other aspects of the property survey, the desire to build or buy a home in Bordeaux was much higher than in other French cities.
However, nearly half of those interviewed believed that it was expensive to buy in Bordeaux, and that the price in housing would continue to rise in 2008. This, it would seem has stopped many people from already buying a house, with 21% of Bordelais saying that they would wait for the prices to go down before they would consider investing in a property project.

“The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fakeit? Then you’ve got it made,” said dramatist and diplomat Jean Giraudoux. Roger Steptoe goes to Bellac to discover how the famous Bellacois has influenced 55 happy summers of theatre, cinema, literature and music

‘Délit d’Swing’ on the opening evening

Bellac’s native playwright is immortalised in an annual festival which this year celebrates its 55th anniversary. The event dates back to 1951 when André Cluzeau, the mayor at the time, unveiled a monument to Jean Giraudoux, who always said that Bellac “is like the most beautiful town in the world”. After the unveiling, Cluzeau and André Steiger, the eminent Swiss-born film and theatre director, dreamed up the drama festival at Bellac in his honour.
The director of this year’s festival is Philippe Cogney. He is excited at the plans for this 55th year: “I’ve tried to programme the festival around its history. One show of wider interest to French News readers is ‘Un Impromptu de Bellac’, based on a play by Giraudoux, and co-produced with the Théâtre National de la Colline in Paris.” Cogney also highly recommends ‘La Nuit des Feux’, written by Eugène Durif.

Station protestors hope préfet will help Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 June 2008
Along the Paris-Toulouse railway line in the Creuse, Saint- Sébastien can now see a faint glimmer of light at the end of a long tunnel. French News has widely reported the SNCF’s attacks on small stations with plans to reduce services or close them altogether. Saint-Sébastien’s plight was noted in March. Since then, Gourdon’s association, Tous Ensemble, has taken to the Paris-Toulouse tracks in the Lot with equal force and a membership totalling more than 1,000.
The local association CODEGASS (Comité de Défense de la Gare de Saint-Sébastien) has now asked Creuse’s préfet Daniel Ferey for a round-table meeting with the SNCF authorities. The préfet has agreed, and so CODEGASS’s protest, planned for Guéret on May 3, was cancelled in an act of good faith. However, all is not back on the rails and the association welcomes new support. Contact the mairie for more information.
