Alastair Campbell’s newly published diary includes an anecdote
about former President of France Jacques Chirac. Tony Blair’s
former spin doctor recalls that at the G8 summit in Tokyo on July 19,
2000, Chirac distinguished himself by lying back in his chair and
snoring through a speech by the Secretary of the Treasury of the
United States. He describes this as “the most striking example of bad
manners and anti-Americanism that he had ever seen”. He also
quotes Blair as blaming (crediting?) the French with “sabotaging”
the second UN Security Council resolution that would have
legitimised the invasion of Iraq.

According to the national
statistics body INSEE,
French home habits
have altered little in a
changing world.
Broadly speaking, the work of
preparing the evening meal is still
the role of the wife. Although in
France the richer you are the later
you eat, most French people still
have their lunch around 12 to
12.30 and dinner on average at
eight o’clock.
