Alastair Campbell’s newly published diary includes an anecdote about former President of France Jacques Chirac. Tony Blair’s former spin doctor recalls that at the G8 summit in Tokyo on July 19, 2000, Chirac distinguished himself by lying back in his chair and snoring through a speech by the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. He describes this as “the most striking example of bad manners and anti-Americanism that he had ever seen”. He also quotes Blair as blaming (crediting?) the French with “sabotaging” the second UN Security Council resolution that would have legitimised the invasion of Iraq.

According to the national statistics body INSEE, French home habits have altered little in a changing world.

Broadly speaking, the work of preparing the evening meal is still the role of the wife. Although in France the richer you are the later you eat, most French people still have their lunch around 12 to 12.30 and dinner on average at eight o’clock.
