Humanity exposed Print E-mail

French sculptor Elisabeth Daynès has unveiled a reconstruction of an early homonid that could be the missing link between man and ape.
The Flores woman was exhibited at the Musée de l’Homme on December 11.
Mme Daynès rebuilt the body from fossil remains, discovered by a team of Indonesian and Australian researchers in a grotto on the Indonesian island of Flores.
The discovery opens up many questions about human evolution and where Flores woman stands in it. Experts are divided whether she is a Homo sapiens, a descendant of Homo erectus who probably arrived on the island 850,000 years ago or an even older species. Evidence suggests a hominid in its own right which has been named Homo Floresiensis.
The induction of Homo Floresiensis into the museum capped the international conference ‘Human Origins Patrimony Studies in South East Asia’. The evening kicked off with a lecture given by the researchers and Elisabeth Daynès herself. A film showed how the figure was painstakingly built up from layers of clay and silica. While the woman’s sex, size and proportions were decided by scientific estimates, the colour and texture of her skin and hair had to be guessed at.
She was only one metre tall, a dwarf by 21st-century human standards, and small even compared to Neanderthal man (1m50). Proportionately, her arms are longer than modern humans, her legs shorter and her feet bigger. She has a flattish face with a little chin and protruding brows. The artist has given her a wondering expression, as if about to speak, and a posture suggesting movement. SZ

L’Homme exposé at the Muséée de l’Homme until April 30. Open daily except Tuesdays 10 am-5pm.
