Bernard Laporte, the coach of the French Rugby 15, finished a tempestuous World Cup that
involved thrashing the All Blacks and being narrowly beaten by England in the semi-finals
and then being thrashed in turn by Argentina. On top of that, he is under investigation for tax
irregularities according to the sports magazine ‘L’Équipe’. He has said that it only concerns
one company and is merely a routine tax investigation. When the French President asked
about it after the Rugby World Cup final, Laporte kicked the question firmly into touch saying
that the presumption of innocence applied.

Thanks to the newspaper ‘Le Monde’,
followers of the Clearstream Affair can
now savour a new angle of enquiry being
pursued by the investigating magistrates Henri
Pons and Jean-Marie d’Huy.
Everyone involved in the enquiry so far
has understood that investigating magistrate
Renaud Van Ruymbeke and his informant
Jean-Louis Grégorin agreed that Grégorin
would send the judge an anonymous letter.
This set out the accusations of moneylaundering
from pay-offs in the Taiwan
frigates affair. Later, he received the famous
computer discs containing the bogus lists of
bank accounts at the Clearstream bank from
the same source. From this was born the
Clearstream Affair. The judge has been
portrayed as one who used unorthodox means
to get at the truth but was misled.

Cécilia wants to paint a new picture.

For some time there had been gossip
about the state of the president’s
marriage but the speed of the separation
took the media by surprise. It was a Swiss
newspaper, ‘La Tribune de Genève’, which
broke the definite news of the end of Nicolas
and Cécilia’s 20-year relationship.
Cécilia gave her first interview to ‘L’Est
Républicain’, a leading provincial newspaper
which is regularly a launchpad for important
breaking news. She was interviewed by the
author and journalist Yves Derai, whose bestknown
book is a hostile biography of
Dominique de Villepin – “the man who loved
himself too much”. Derai was obviously
regarded as a safe pair of hands.

Half the population has been in dire financial straits.

Almost a third of French people have
already been in dire financial straits
and found themselves trying to live
below the poverty line, according to a recent
survey by Ipsos and the Secours Populaire.
Nearly half (45%) of the population said
they had been on the verge of having serious
financial problems and 30% actually went
under. More worryingly, according to the
authors of the study, this figure is certainly
underreported due to the shame people feel
about their situation. 80% of people
questioned believed that their children ran an
even greater risk of one day falling below the
poverty line.
