The French fencing
teams covered
themselves in glory
at the 2007 world
championships,
held from
September 28 to
October 7 in Saint-
Petersbourg, Russia.
They won the most
medals of any
participating country, bringing home four gold, two silver and
two bronze. The golds were all won at team events: Le
Péchoux, Brice Guyart, Marcel Marcilloux and Nicolas
Beaudan won the Men’s team fleuret (foil fencing), while
Erik Boisse, Ulrich Robeiri, Fabrice and Jérôme Jeannet one
the Male team épée (sword fencing). One of the French
women’s teams, comprising Audrey Descouts, Laura Flessel,
Hajnalka Kiraly and Maureen Nisima, won the team épée
while the Women’s team sabre went to the other team of
Anne Lise Touya, Léonore Perrus, Carole Vergne and Cécile
Argriolas.

France defeats Pakistan....
at the Indoor Cricket World Cup

It seems that two defeats
at the hands of the Pumas
of Argentine (not to
mention losing to le XV de
la rose) will play havoc with
the French economy.
But just think of the
chaos on the Islamabad
Stock Exchange following
not one but two defeats of
the Pakistani cricket team...
by France.
And that’s exactly what
happened at the end of
September in the Indoor
Cricket World Cup held in
Whitchurch, Bristol. Did you
miss this landmark event?
Cricket in Pakistan
counts its practitioners by the
hundreds of thousands. In
France, there are just 1,000
licensed players, 56 affiliated
clubs. There are probably
rather more players and
clubs than these official
figures, but they operate,
shall we say, somewhat
outside the law; and many of
the ‘legals’ would be hard
pushed to participate in
games of this intensity...

Cédric and Fred pack their clubs and take off for a golf resort in the south of France.

The Golf de Pont
Royal is strategically
located in a popular
tourist area, halfway
between Avignon and Aixen-
Provence, about 45
minutes from the
Marseille-Provence
international airport and
about the same distance
from the TGV train station in Avignon.
The course was designed by Severiano
Ballesteros, a real golfing legend whose
talent and experience give this course its
definite professional touch. The 6,303-metre
track plays to a par 72. The 18-hole green fee
is a little over the average (€55 in low season
or €70 in high season) but surely worth the
experience. Built in a ‘resort’ fashion the
facility has all the services customers may
look for in such a leisure place.
Besides the 18-hole championship golf
gourse, you will be able to enjoy a heated
swimming pool, solarium, tennis, horse
riding etc... The restaurant carries a large
variety of healthy and typical Provence
cuisine, with good customer service, a
beautiful terrace, and reasonable pricing
(average €20).

She delivered pizzas to
Wandsworth from a
back-to-back terraced
house in Clapham; she trotted
round Hyde Park Corner in
eight lanes of traffic, and Stop
signs at T junctions were
generally ignored… pretty
streetwise for a seven-yearold,
the age at which Libby
Robinson bought her. Now
she’s kicking her heels up in
the green fields of Abzac,
where the Charente, Vienne
and Limousin converge. Meet
Precious, a very aptly-named
Fell pony.
It’s also been quite a
journey for Libby Robinson,
president of the Association
Française du Poney Fell
(AFPF). Born in Ireland, she
spent her childhood in the
English Lakes, farmed in
Dorset, shivered on Dartmoor
for a winter, then moved up to
work in the Black Country
Museum in Dudley before
France beckoned eight
years ago.
