organisations, furious that a half-price champagne promotion
lasted less than a day. The offer in December 2003 was in 18

Suez and Gaz de France appear grateful to EADS and Airbus for
occupying the first days of President Sarkozy and taking the
spotlight off them. Their merger was proposed by the outgoing
government as a way of protecting Suez from an Italian
takeover, but ran into a political storm because the deal would
have denationalised Gaz de France.

French banks were accused of an insurance fiddle which could
total €11.5 billion. The influential consumers’ pressure group
UFC-Que Choisir, acting on a story in the satirical newspaper
‘Le Canard Enchaîné’, found that banks were not returning to
customers money owed to them from insurance companies. The
cash was from the compulsory life insurance needed to get a
mortgage in France.
