At the autumn conference
organised by regional
members of L’Alliance
Végétarienne in Arreau (65),
the emphasis was on
responsible eating. The event
attracted an audience of
meat-eaters as well as vegans
and vegetarians.
The evening was chaired
by Jacqueline Reignier,
naturopath, fitness instructor
and cookery teacher, with
contributions from
nutritional and dietary
advisor, Hervé Duplan.
Jacqueline explained that
quality fresh produce can no
longer be taken for granted
in France, given the advent
of industrial farming
techniques.

Three months ago, the
inhabitants of Bouloc, a
village in Tarn-et-Garonne,
learned of a plan to excavate
a 53ha limestone quarry
between them and
nearby hamlets.
Headed by property
owners Mr. Daniel
Bonnemaison and his wife,
the locals formed an
association to fight the
project, because they feared
its impact on the
environment and the stability
of their buildings. 80% of the
commune signed a petition
against the quarry.

Changes to Andorran
investment laws are to
facilitate foreign businesses
setting up in the area.
Changes to the law
regulating foreign investment
are due to be approved over
the next few weeks by the
Andorran parliament,
meaning that entrepeneurs
can set up in the prinicipality
without an Andorran resident
having to participate in the
venture. The move is part of
wide changes set to adapt the
principality’s economy to
international standards.

Gignac, early evening
November 1357. Two
guards stand atop
their tower watching
westward for the ever
encroaching English
invaders. The rest of the
Gignacois below are already
gathered around their
hearths, shutters drawn
closed against the cold, and
the enemy.
Six hundred and fifty
years later and the same
Gignacois are gathered again
in the square gazing up as
the very same tower, under
English control for almost
five years, is set ablaze. But
things have changed, and
there is no joy, no freedom,
no victory. On this night we
all lose.

One distinguishing
feature of the
truffle
season, and where
the public can buy
truffles – tuber
melanosporum, the
black diamond – is the
extensive market in
Rognes in Provence.
It is now the 19th year in
a row that this village is
preparing for the great
annual Truffle and
Gastronomic market.
From a stand which
started with a local citizen
offering his fresh truffles to
the public at the marketplace
in the run up to Christmas,
the event has grown to
attract more than 15,000
visitors last year, with some
120 stands. This year, the
number of stands will be
limited to 100, selling, as
well as truffles and other
delicacies, the famous fresh
smoked Baltic sea salmon.
