The final of the Grand National of Trotting was brilliantly
won by Nimrod Boréalis driven so well by Matthieu
Abrivard who lay in ambush most of the race to surge up and
take control on the final bend to win by four lengths. Second
was a horse I’ve always liked: Monte Georgio. The overall
winner was Jean-Baptiste Bossuet’s Orla Fun who was so far
ahead on points in this round-France competition.

Bath’s CEO is optimistic about his club’s chances and shares his predictions for this year’s cup with Sylvie Mathis.
Bath Chief Executive Bob Calleja
is expecting a French-English
mixed ECC final this year,
although the English domination in this
year’s tournament is clear, with Bath and
three other English teams leading
their pool.
From Calleja’s perspective, the
hardest times should come when playing
the Sale Sharks and Newcastle on the
English side, and Brives and Castres on
the French.

World karate champion Simon Williams has left his chop all over the world. Roger Steptoe tracks him down in Saint-Mathieu.
For Simon Williams, 2008 promises to be something of a
turning-point. Already with national, European and four
world karate championships under his black belt he’s a
celebrity in his own right but also takes time to lead two
weekly karate classes in the Haute-Vienne (Limousin).
“I’ve been teaching in France for three years and, now in
my mid-30s, I would like to give British and French students
some of the firm training I had when I was young.” Recently
he and his students were accepted into the Fédération
Française de Karate (FFKarate for short). “We are the first
English people to be accepted into this federation, governed by
the Minister of Sport and recognised throughout the world. I
feel it is an honour to be a part of this. Now my students have
the chance to enter regional competitions and courses and to
represent France on an international level.”

Despite threats of global warming there is great excitement
in the village of Chaux-Neuve in the Doubs as it once
again hosts the combined Nordic World Cup on the 19th and
20th of January. For those used to the idea that the only real
mountains in France are
the Alps and Pyrénées, it
is worth remembering
that skiers from Franche
Comté in the Jura won
four Olympic medals at
the Winter Olympic
Games in Turin in 2006
in Scandinavian skiing
events: Florence
Baverel-Robert and
Vincent Defrasne, both
from Pontarlier, won
gold. Competitions in
Nordic skiing are known
to date back to Swedish
army training in the 18th
century but the present
combination of racing
and jumping first
became an Olympic
event in 1924.
