The philosopher Pascal’s idea that it is smarter to believe in God than in nothing is still alive in the Haute-Savoie, at least among its high-mountain guides, who rely on ropes and ice axes but sometimes need a little extra help. Every summer at the Fêtes des Guides the guides turn out in traditional rig to have their equipment blessed by the local priest in towns and villages like Chamonix, Saint-Gervais and Samoëns. In addition to any heavenly insurance, it’s a great opportunity to introduce them to throngs of tourists, hand out diplomas to young climbers and parade through the streets behind the village band, often joined by instructors sweating in their winter uniforms.

Five years ago, Peter Wood came over from East Yorkshire to settle in Le Paradou, a derelict bar/café at Carmarans near Estaing (Aveyron). After living in a caravan the first year, he moved first into the bar area where wind whistled through the panelled walls. Gradually, he pulled together plans, builders, gardens and made friends. A professional artist, teacher, musician, photographer, fisherman, naturalist, hunter and many other things, Peter had dreams for Le Paradou – an art gallery, atelier, accommodation, private bar and salon for guests and lovely riverside gardens with fishing boats, canoes and pedalos. Many specimen fish have been caught here, from 50lb carp to big catfish and most freshwater species.
