La Coquille Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 May 2008
Since the 10th century, pilgrims from all over Europe have wended, often wearily, their way to Compostela in Galicia to visit the shrine of St James, adorned with a scallop shell. Sir Walter Ralegh said: “Give me my scallop shell of quiet my staff of faith to walk upon.”

Bishop Erasmus claimed that the sea around the coast of Compostela abounded with this nourishing mollusc. So, it became a symbol of pilgrimage. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims entered the Périgord from Limoges at a village called Sainte-Marie. They were lodged and fed at a small convent nearby. The convent became a settlement and took on the name of the scallop. Have you guessed it? ‘Scallop’ in French is La Coquille, which is why scallops on restaurant menus are Coquilles Saint-Jacques. Next month finds me “Behind the name” in the Périgord blanc.

If you enjoy opera, you’ll be pleased to know that a number of free concerts and recitals are being performed this summer throughout the Dordogne.
The recitals in Preyssac d’Excideuil church are courtesy of FAVA (the Franco- American Vocal Academy) and will begin with a special recital by Frédérique Added and William Lewis, the president and vice president of FAVA, on June 15 at 7pm. All recitals are free and each will be followed by a cocktail. Later recitals will feature students from FAVA. In July and August, the Opéra du Périgord will be staging the operettas ‘La Périchole’ and ‘La vie Parisienne’ by Jacques Offenbach at various venues. Performances will feature promising students from FAVA and the Festival Chamber Orchestra.
