As green as green – or greener Print E-mail

The Parti Socialiste has been fairly verdant for quite some time, so it was no surprise to see president of the Poitou-Charentes conseil régional Ségolène Royal stroll through the mud to inspect the skeleton of the new intercommunal rubbish sorting depot being built (with considerable financial aid from the region) just outside Gençay. Apart from doing good works by its very purpose – rubbish triage is close to Ségo’s heart – most of its domestic electricity will be supplied by its photovoltaic roof. On Tuesday May 6, two great ships sailed into the port of La Rochelle, to join the 400th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Quebec. First, the frigate ‘Germinal’ arrived. Then the threemasted ‘Bélem’ sailed in, did a tour of the harbour, but sailed out to moor up in deeper water.

The weather was overcast, but no cloud could dampen the spirits of the celebrants, who consumed plenty of white wine with their mussels, then joined folk musicians from Rochefort to dance on the quayside. Among the wellwishers were regional council president Ségolène Royal and Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Veau.

Tuesday, 10 June 2008
Routine laboratory tests carried out on the organic maize of a family farm in the Deux-Sèvres add to the growing evidence that GMOs do indeed cross-pollinate over a wide area.
Christian Veillat and his son Julien organically farm their fields in Villiers-sur- Plaine. The nearest GM crops are 35km away. The Veillats have lodged a complaint with the local gendarmerie for contamination of their crops.
