A year-round full ban on
jet-ski activities has been
introduced in the
Somme Bay.
The ban has been
brought in to protect the
coastline and nesting birds,
and seals which have been
forced to abandon their pups.
It contains some
dispensations for jet skis in
emergencies and certain
allowed exhibitions.
The ban is a first for
France, but should set a
precedent for the rest of
France’s coastal areas.

On the morning of Sunday
September 2, in the little
Anglo-French Military
Cemetery in a clearing of the
Savelot Forest in the
Morvan, a ceremony was
held to remember those
members of the Maquis, 21
in all, and the seven crew of
a RAF Halifax who were
buried here in 1944.

“Art is like a pair of
opera glasses
through which
you can deal with any
subject: politics, economics,
love, death [..] In a world full
of norms, art is a rare sphere
of freedom.”
These are the words of
Noisette69, a Lyonnaise
blogger pondering the city’s
2007 Contemporary Art
Biennial. The three-month
event, now up and running,
features Jérôme Bel in ‘The
Show must go on’ at the
National Opera of Lyon,
along with a host of artists,
including Juan Pérez
Agirregoikoa, Una Szeemann
and Tomas Saraceno. Also on
show this year is the work of
Lyon-born-and-bred Rams.

About 85 orientalshaped
tent-stands
climbed in neat rows
up Philippe Harbrard’s
peaceful rolling farmland at
Chantermerle-les-Blé, in the
heart of the Drôme.
The event was the ‘Tech
and Bio’ salon, in the
département which leads the
country in organic produce at
a level of 10 %, compared to
the national average of three
percent. Harbrard’s parents
were some of France’s
organic pioneers by adopting
the practice in 1969, and
today Harbrard combines
organic dairy farming with
corn crops and apricot
growing.

Liz Morgan goes shopping across the border.
‘Chimborazo,
Cotopaxi had
stolen me away.’
Remember school poetry
and the romantic stuff of
dreams?
Dream on. The
fabulous markets of
Ventigmiglia and San
Remo are justifiable grownup
substitutions. If you live
in PACA or the Var, it will
be a full day’s outing but
allow an extra day for
recuperation of feet, spine,
knees, and shoulders. But
that’s the negative side, and
don’t worry, you will
straighten up.
