The modernisation of the regional railway (TER) lines from
Amiens-Loan and Saint-Quentin is now complete. The
project was financed largely by the region to the tune of more
than €5 million, complemented by €4.5 million from the state
and €3.3 million from French rail freight. The number of
weekday trains will be stepped up by a third, with even more
during peak periods.

Fusion couture and emerging talent, Carly Jane Lock reports from the ever more eco-friendly Paris catwalks.

Elie Saab excelled in his role as a jeweller.
The pièce maitresse of his latest collection, which came in several variants of silk, chiffon, taffeta and tulle, was a strapless empire-line dress inspired by the diamond.
As Valentino bid farewell to the fashion industry
with his last ever show in Paris, Lebanese
designer Elie Saab proved he has well and truly

Ecologically sound style-makers, Marithé et François Girbaud, of
jeanetic engineering fame (they invented the ‘stonewash’ fading
technique in 1976) have come up with a new laser denim fading
technique that saves on water.
The vintage look ‘Imajean’ is the newest edition to the French jeans
empire. The designer jeans are on sale at the hip M+FG megastore in Paris
at €250 (ouch!).

Don’t the French love a hero? No sooner had Jo Wilfried
Tsonga won through to the finals of the Australian
Tennis Open than TV commentators were praising the
length of his ball, “Qu’est-ce qu’il est long en balle!” as if
talking about length of finish in a good vintage Saint-
Julien. Sadly, he didn’t win but already, in the minds of the
French media, he has achieved rising star-status. He has
been likened to Mohammed Ali, and it’s true that his airpunching
antics after a winning shot are an echo of
“Fly like a butterfly” and you wonder how soon
Will Smith will be looking his way for another chance at
a box-office smash.
During the gripping final, I noticed that another
franglism has crept in from the tennis court which will no
doubt turn up in ‘my’ crossword in the women’s
supplement to the local Sundays: “T’as vu ce ‘passing’?” I
wonder why the French language, usually more verbose
than English, likes its ‘-ings’ to be nouns and drops the
‘shot’ from ‘passing’. Any ideas, Richard Plazzotta? (Fans
of French Polish will be pleased to see that he’s back in
force this month after a holiday.)
