Picture the scene: four friends sitting in a French bistro
in the city of London. Andrew and Sharon are waiting
for Jeremy and Sandra who have just returned from a
two-week holiday in the Dordogne.
Andrew: Hello, you two. How was the holiday?
Jeremy: Great! We stayed in a gîte owned by a chap from Leicester. It had everything, even BBC television. I didn’t miss the news or a single episode of ‘East Enders’.
Sharon: What was the food like?
Sandra: Terrific! We found a lovely Indian restaurant in Bergerac where they served my favourite Chicken Tikka Marsala.
Jeremy: The Californian wine was delicious.
Andrew: What was the night life like?
Jeremy: Great! We found a marvellous Irish pub where the Guinness was perfect and we had a great time taking part in the pub quiz.
Sandra: And I won a coffee mug with Salisbury Cathedral printed on it.
Andrew: They say the markets are fabulous.
Jeremy: They certainly are! Ribérac market is great. We bought Spanish oranges, wholemeal bread, Italian cheese and guess what? We found some parsnips.
Andrew: Was there any sport?
Jeremy: Yes of course, I was invited to play cricket for the local village. I scored 30 and took two wickets but we were beaten by the local Pakistani team.
Sharon: Sounds like a great holiday!
Andrew: We must go to the Dordogne next year. Sounds like a real home from home. Another coffee, Jeremy?
Jeremy and Sandra: Oh yes, please! (Enter left onto the terrace a French waiter.)
Andrew: Garçon ! Quatre cafés au lait avec quatre croissants, s’il vous plaît.
Waiter: Bien sûr, Monsieur, j’arrive.

Yes, as a few readers pointed out, there were a couple
of mistakes in the What’s On lists last month, not entirely
our fault as sometimes dates and venues are changed
after our press day, or organisers forget to date, and
update their online info. It’s always a good plan to call
before setting out in expectation of a culturally uplifting
soirée, or driving miles for a melon fair. Above all, a little
indulgence for the editorial team, the highly motivated
young generation of French News.
