American opera star
Jessye Norman will
perform at the opening night
of Aix’s new Grand Theatre
de Provence on December 1.
Having been inaugurated
at the end of June, the
theatre’s first season
continues with the promised
mix of dance, jazz, classical,
comedy and Baroque.
Concerts before the end of
the year include the pianoplaying
Labeque sisters, the
French Youth Orchestra,
Faure’s Requiem and Romeo
and Juliet performed by the
Preljocaj contemporary
dance company.

Over the next few years, the governors
of Briançon have decided to make it
one of the best year-round centres for
sport and patrimony in the Alpine Region.
As sous-préfecture of the Hautes-Alpes,
highest town in France, and a candidate for
the title of UNESCO National Heritage site
for its Cité Vauban, the town (population
c.12,500), is already held in some esteem.
Now many new projects have been
approved; some are underway and some
areawaiting final planning.

cliffs of the Le vallon Sourn,
widely used in training for
major expeditions, and for

aiming to put itself on the
map of world music.

All medical staff and
establishments in the
Var were put on level
one of alert last month,
following the discovery at
the seaside resort of Saint-
Maxime of larvae of a strain
of mosquito (the tiger
mosquito or Aedes Albopictus)
rarely found in France,
which carries the virus of
Chikungunya.
Similar alerts had been
issued in Corsica and the
Alpes-Maritimes, the only
other départements covered
by the national plan for
protection against this
particular virus.

Threatened by cheaper imports from China and Ukraine, the
assemblée départementale of Provence has voted to subsidise
the lavender industry with €604,050 over a four-year period,
to promote replanting the fields and developing equipment
and technology.
