Andy Kay attends a meeting of partisans of the controversial Bagatelle racing circuit, and hears the latest developments in the Brooker-Careys’ story.

It has been a while since news has been reported about the historic motor racing circuit and museum project at Saint-Front-sur- Nizonne. The interim has seen no shortage of rumour: That the backers had dropped out; that the proposers had given up in frustration; that the whole thing would be done in Spain instead, for instance.
Nothing, it seems, could be further from the truth. At the end of September close to two hundred of the circuit’s supporters gathered at Bagatelle, not only to admire some rare cars both ancient and modern, but also to hear the latest progress report.

As the autumn nights draw in, thoughts turn to indoor pursuits to while away the hours. Young and old alike are drawn to Country or Line dancing, an increasingly popular way of spending leisure time, keeping fit and meeting new friends.
Throughout France there is massive interest in all things American, but in particular in things with a ‘country and western’ feel. Up and down the country there are many clubs, usually affiliated to one of the several umbrella organisations which organise competitions and regional and national events. The country ‘family’ is a big and convivial one. A major festival is held each year usually in July in Mirande, Gascony (32), which is now recognised as the premier country music festival in Europe.

Development of Sète harbour has continued apace since the région took control of the commercial port. First, it won a contract to import cars with Spanish shipping company Sintax, and now it has started a new ferry service to North Africa.
€20 million is being invested in the port infrastructure, loading and welcome facilities, to serve the new thrice-weekly service to Algeria. The service, which started in September, runs to three Algerian ports – Skikda, Béjaïa and Oran.
The service is run by Société nationale maritime Corse Méditerranée, and the car ferry, named the ‘Corse’, can carry 400 passengers and 200 cars.

Brave rescue in Homps Print E-mail

It is hard enough sometimes to choose a pudding, but for Denis and Mavis Fisk of Bélarga in the Hérault, the choice became impossible. While perusing the menu, their attention was knocked askance by the blaring headlights of a car lying stranded, deep in the Canal du Midi in Homps.
Yves, the barman from next door and a former pro-rugby player, dived in, broke the window and rescued the elderly duo still inside the car. The couple were in the last stage of moving house from mid-France to the Pyrénées and had lost the trail of the removal van due to the torrential rain.
The lady was taken to hospital having swallowed canal water and the owners of Le Tournesol, which was moored outside the restaurant, provided a hot shower and some warm clothing for the husband.
Despite the drama, Denis reports that the fellow diners had no problem finishing their puds at the ‘En Bonne Companie’ restaurant, overlooking the canal.
