Travelling through central Aix will be easier from the end of
June when the city launches its bike-hire initiative named
V’Hello. Two hundred bikes will be available at 16 locations
around the city and anyone aged 14 and up can take a bike as
long as they have registered beforehand. Aix’s V’Hello follows
the successful bike hire project in Lyon which has been running
for two years. Marseille is set to join them soon with hundreds of
bikes available for hire around the city.

Amateurs of contemporary and abstract art will all meet in Aixen-
Provence from June 8 to 11. The ‘Sm’art’ outdoor salon
(Salon méditerranéen d’art contemporain et d’art abstrait).
Professional painters, sculptors, photographers come from all
over the continent to exhibit under individual tents. In the quiet
park of La Baume, a conference and the official opening
presided over by Pierre Cardin announce an exceptional and
innovating salon. The official opening is celebrated on June 8
from 6pm to 9pm.

Daily 10am - 8pm. Ends 6pm on June 11. €5. Domaine de la Baume.

They say the kings of Siam would make a present of a white
elephant to courtiers they wished to ruin, since they couldn’t
afford their upkeep. Probably, the eccentric Parisian antiquarian
Édouard Lacarde had no such intention when he bequeathed his
monumental folly, Roseland Abbey, to the city of Nice, but the
effect is similar. For years, this extraordinary estate has defeated
the imagination of successive administrations who could not find
a suitable use for it but still faced huge maintenance costs.

In an old Mayan legend, there were 13
crystal skulls which could sing and
talk. According to a prophecy they
would be found in about 2012 and
would help man acquire wisdom and
universal knowledge. Actually two of
these crystal human-like skulls exist.
