The conseil régional is holding an industrial design competition for small and medium-sized companies based in Aquitaine. Entries can be either new products or make-overs of existing ones. Winners will be selected by a professional jury led by industrial designer Matali Crasset. Assessment will be based on the financial viability of the product, its marketing and industrial strategy, the meticulousness of the design, the company’s experience in industrial design and the role played by the designer.

The panel of judges of the Initiateurs du Demain competition will now meet in September, instead of June as previously announced. Anyone wishing to enter the competition should apply before the end of August.
The competition is open to the founders of any sort of enterprise in the Dordogne, whether individual or group projects.

The State statistics body INSEE Aquitaine has just published its report on the region’s economy for the year 2006.
Aquitaine’s préfet Francis Idrac quoted the ancient Greek saying ‘know thyself’ in his praise of INSEE’s work. The report highlights the fall in unemployment, the rise in the number of new businesses and a slowing of applications for the RMI (rough equivalent of jobseeker’s allowance).

Scientists from the Institute of Research in Agriculture and Environmental Engineering (CEMAGREF) in Bordeaux have bred the first artificially-reproduced European sturgeon. These fish are reared in captivity, and their reproduction is vital now that wild sturgeon are so rare. It has taken 20 years to achieve this breakthrough. In a few years, mature brood fish will be freed into the rivers and will hopefully re-stock the wild sturgeon population.

André Lhote was born in Bordeaux in 1885 and studied decorative sculpture at the school of Fine Arts there. He was also painting in his spare time, and by the age of 20, had made up his mind that this was his chosen medium.
Lhote was one of the group of artists who, between 1910 and 1912, helped launch the modern art revolution through cubism.
