For the past two months
the Gap to Briançon rail
link has been closed, while a
total of 21km of the line has
been re-laid for a smoother,
faster ride. During this time,
coaches have transported
passengers between Gap and
Briançon.
At the railway exhibition
in Embrun Station, SNCF
commercial assistant Stephen
Paris, said: “The line is due
to re-open on October 26,
using modern four-car
rolling stock. The journey
will be 12 minutes shorter
and more comfortable than
using the often unreliable
diesel trains. This is part of a
project that will continue
into next year to completely
upgrade the whole line from
Marseille to Gap”.

Outraged by the poor state of the motorways around Aixen-
Provence, the city’s mayor has erected bright yellow
signs alongside the road describing the state’s maintenance
as scandalous.
On October 8, mayor Maryse Joissains-Masini put up five
signs at the side of the A51, each declaring: “Scandaleux ! La
propreté de la voie que vous empruntez est de la compétence
de l’État.” The signs are aimed at the Direction
interdépartementale des routes (DIR), which is in charge of
motorway care. That night, four of the signs were removed.

MAMAC, Nice’s
Museum of Modern
and Contemporary Art, has
celebrated the return of a
large number of Niki de
Saint-Phalle’s works by
restoring five of them. The
works, which have been on
an extensive Asian tour, were
donated by the artist shortly
before her death in 2002.
They are among the earliest
examples of the Nanas,
monumental and colourful
statues of female figures.
Now more than 40 years old,
the rigid plastic from which
they were made was starting
to crack and discolour.
Painstaking cleaning and
repairs by a team of experts
has shown the figures again
in their true colours. The
work was sponsored to the
tune of €30,000 by the BNPParibas
bank.

With the the eco-movement spilling out on to the shores,
Fréjus is organising ‘Ecobeach’ – the first salon du littoral.
The organisers say: “Tourism to the coast and beach
sports are only set to grow in Europe. This, combined with
the weakness of the seaside ecosystem, requires a global
approach from all the stakeholders, and a considerate
tourist population.”
The salon will bring together travel agents, developers,
sports and environmental groups, to discuss and put forward
sustainable solutions for both tourism and the environment.

In a département of many
dispersed small villages
and few large towns, public
transport in the Var is
fragmented, making people
rely on their cars.
With this in mind, the
Var, starting this month, is
embarking on its biggestever
study of the actual
movements of individuals, in
order to find a more
appropriate combination of
public transport – water, rail,
road etc.
In the first stage, a team
of 120 researchers will tour
the 44 communes in the area
around Toulon. They will
identify a representative
sample of 5,000 families
who are prepared to discuss
their transport arrangements
and the changes that would
best help them in detail.
Interviews are expected to
take an average of an hour
and a half. The study will be
extended to the rest of the
département next year.
The research is intended
to produce a complete
database of residents’
requirements, and so help
towards a full overhaul of the
Var’s public transport.
