Of course the Lot-et- Garonne is the prune département – but the village of Saint- Aubin (pop 424), 10km south-east of Monflanquin (47), has the unique distinction of being officially approved by the Agriculture Ministry as the local Site Remarquable du Goût for the prune. It celebrates this status each September (this year on the ninth) with its Foire aux Pruneaux (Prune Fair).

In the depths of the Périgord noir, an outdoor theatre has been beguiling audiences and cocooning performers since 2006.
The Théâtre du fon du loup, near the village of Carvès, hosts plays, shows and concerts from May until September. It is run by the Atelier Théâtre 24 association, which not only produces its own shows, but also lends the stage, equipment and advice free to outside companies. “We want to give visiting companies the time and space to try things out,” says the project’s creator and visionnaire Jean-Paul Ouvrard whose aim is to democratise theatre and make culture accessible to all. A long-time thespian, Ouvrard achieved a coup for the theatre’s opening in 2006, bringing ex-colleague Peter Brook to Carvès to premier his latest play ‘Sizwe Banzi est mort’.

The abbey of Boschaud, a monument historique under French state ownership since 1950, has become the property of the commune of Villars.
The agreement was signed on July 6, between the state represented by the préfet of the Dordogne, François Tallec, and the commune, represented by its mayor, Michel Courtois. It means that work can now begin to restore the abbey. The state, the région and the département, will pay most of the €400,000 (before tax) needed, leaving the small commune to bear only €10,000 of the cost of the works.

Asaucy calendar, featuring the clients of the Star Inn bar in Périgueux, and the owners themselves, is on sale now. The calendar celebrates the Star Inn’s 20th anniversary, and all profits will go to ‘La Ligue Contre le Cancer’ and ‘Friends 4 Life’.
The main charity is already well established, but continually needs funds to maintain its programme to help the growing number of people suffering from cancer, and offering support to their families. Some of the money will be specifically allocated to children who are being treated for cancer and leukemia at the hospital in Périgueux.
