Those longing to stretch out on the beach with an interesting
read are catered for by a new summer service offered by the
mediatheque of Fréjus-Plage. Every weekday morning from
9am–1pm, sunbathers can visit a kiosk close to the beach and
take their pick from a selection of books which can be
borrowed free of charge. The kiosk also provides
entertainment for children, leaving parents to follow tales of
mystery or romance uninterrupted.

Three hundred and fifty hectares were destroyed by a forest fire on Monday, July 16 in the Var. The conflagration was caused by a
public works engine parked on the side of the A8 highway that produced sparks and set plants ablaze. The flames quickly spread due
to strong southeastern winds, high temperatures and low humidity levels. By the middle of the afternoon, the wildfire approached the
village of Bagnols-en-Fôret, and firemen formed a barrier to prevent its advance. Before midnight, the situation was under control
thanks to the effort of 560 firefighters from the Var, Alpes-Maritimes and Bouches-du-Rhône regions.
French News would like to thank Stephen Norton for sending in this photo, taken on July 17 from his home in Cabris. He will soon
receive a bottle of wine for his efforts.

Arestructuring plan by the ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals), would put an end to the Monaco ATP
Masters. The ‘Brave New World’ plans will change the Men’s
Tennis calendar, and see off smaller tournaments such as
those at Monaco and Hamburg. 2008 could well be the last

showdown. This comes despite the event’s increasing
popularity – this year 210,000 spectators attended.
