Brian McCulloch swallows his childhood prejudices and takes the new 4X4 for a spin in the country.
The fashion for 4x4s as the main
or only car in a family left me
puzzled. As a child and teenager,
I was often exposed to Landrovers and
Nissan Patrols on friends’ farms and
ranches in Zimbabwe. They were
handy for taking feed to the cattle on
dirt tracks and for pottering around, but
comfort was not a factor.
Indeed, any farmer who had made
it used to spend money on roads so that
he could replace his 4x4 by a much
more comfortable pick-up, or even a
saloon car.

Last month, we gave you five of the best properties in France for around €100,000. This month we’ve raised the budget slightly, looking at apartments in some
breathtaking locations. While many people are looking to buy property in beautiful rural areas, the countryside is not always ideal for short breaks and activities

Lindsay Woodster dicovers the pleasure of pointing, and how, exactly, to do it.
If you have a fine thick stone
wall with lichens and not too
many deep crevices where mice
can create storage depots and
nurseries, what is the point of
filling in the spaces or levelling
the surface?
Pointing up a wall does more than
smarten the appearance of your house:
it prevents moisture from eroding
the mortar sandwiching the stones,
stops ivies and other climbers from
degrading the structure, and
insulates the house against cold and
heat.

À la bonne Dame de septembre (8), tout fruit est bon à prendre
En septembre le fainéant peut aller se pendre
Automne en fleur, hiver plein de rigueur
Sage is an attractive and easy
herb to grow. The bushes reach
half a metre in height and can
spread over a square metre or
more so one bush will normally
be enough for kitchen needs.
However, some people like sage
tea and if this is drunk on a
regular basis, it may be better to
sow a whole row.
