Brian McCulloch swallows his childhood prejudices and takes the new 4X4 for a spin in the country.

The fashion for 4x4s as the main or only car in a family left me puzzled. As a child and teenager, I was often exposed to Landrovers and Nissan Patrols on friends’ farms and ranches in Zimbabwe. They were handy for taking feed to the cattle on dirt tracks and for pottering around, but comfort was not a factor.
Indeed, any farmer who had made it used to spend money on roads so that he could replace his 4x4 by a much more comfortable pick-up, or even a saloon car.

If you have a fine thick stone wall with lichens and not too many deep crevices where mice can create storage depots and nurseries, what is the point of filling in the spaces or levelling the surface?
Pointing up a wall does more than smarten the appearance of your house: it prevents moisture from eroding the mortar sandwiching the stones, stops ivies and other climbers from degrading the structure, and insulates the house against cold and heat.

Sage is an attractive and easy herb to grow. The bushes reach half a metre in height and can spread over a square metre or more so one bush will normally be enough for kitchen needs. However, some people like sage tea and if this is drunk on a regular basis, it may be better to sow a whole row.
