Barry Cornell finds that reading the instruction manual can seriously damage your health
You may have heard the story about the
chap who asked the librarian where he
could find a manual on how to commit
suicide, and received the reply: “We’ve had
to stop lending them, I’m afraid; people just
never brought them back.”
Well, in my youth I never seemed to
have much success with instruction manuals.
Most had to do with ways of succeeding
with the opposite sex, and as such promised
me great riches. But I remember that even
after a most careful study of Victor
Sylvester’s ‘Illustrated Guide to Dancing’ (I
even made notes, and practised in front of a
mirror), I subsequently failed spectacularly
to jive at the Sixth Form Club and had to
pretend it was epilepsy; on another occasion
I eagerly took home a book entitled ‘How to
Hug’, only to find I’d acquired the fourth
volume of the ‘Encyclopaedia Britannica’.

Innocent diners were ousted from their seats after an alleged bomb alert led to
an inconclusive search by the local bomb squad
Aphone call to the police station
in Saint-Jean-de-Luz on May
21 warned, “A bomb is going to
go off at three o clock”. The male
caller also gave the alleged location
of the explosive device, an estate
agency in the centre of Guéthary,
Guéthary Immobilier.
Coming within hours of the arrests
in Bordeaux of four high-profile ETA
members, the warning was given high
status. Within minutes, police and
security forces had descended on
the normally quiet village. A security
cordon was put in place, staff at
the nearby mairie were evacuated
along with local residents and diners
eating lunch.

The eighth Grand Prix Historique in Pau took place
on May 24th and 25th. Despite torrential rain which
persisted throughout the weekend and an electrical storm
postponing a race on the first day – and threatened to cut
power to the race circuit – the Grand Prix was a
resounding success with brave competitors racing
admirably on the track despite the adverse conditions.
Winners came from many nations including France,
Britain and Switzerland.

Local French League
One team Les Girondins
de Bordeaux may have
a Manchester United
player joining them in the
new season.
Mikael Silvestre, a
French international who
plays in defence for the
victorious Manchester
United, this year’s
premiership and UEFA
champions, said a move
to Bordeaux “was
not impossible”.
Silvestre used to play
with Laurent Blanc, the
manager of ‘Les Girondins
de Bordeaux’, when he
played for United between
2001 and 2003. Blanc,
named fourth best French
footballer of all time by
‘France Football’ magazine,
was said to be in talks with
Silvestre last year over a
possible transfer.
