Hot air balloons still have their place, but it’s not always in the air, as Jon Walker discovers.

Top balloonists thumped down into the fertile hills south of Cognac to end a three-day fiesta of hot air and thrills. This year, the Hot Air Balloon European Cup and Ladies World Cup from August 2 to 5, which attracted more than 50 pilots, began at Mainfonds and ended with a flight over Cognac.

The Charente nurtures some precious wildlife. Lindsay Woodster looks at one organisation trying to keep it that way

Aserious pollution crisis caused by major paper factories in the 1980s brought Charente Nature (CN) to public attention for the part it played in the subsequent trial. The association is now seen as a key player in the protection of the Charentais environment. Founded in 1970, CN now has a research centre and library; runs a significant education programme; and is commissioned to carry out statistical and scientific studies.

The post office at the Orangerie in Niort has achieved the odd but laudable distinction of being the first French post office – indeed the first enterprise in Deux-Sévres other than hospitals and emergency services – to be equipped with its own heart defibrillator.
