The dates of the summer sales is decided by the préfecture of each département after consultation with shopkeepers and consumers. Most started on June 27 at 8am and can last a maximum of six weeks. As soon as they are known, they are published on the following website, so grab your purses and onward to the fray!

The EU has opened a new website, Voyager en Europe, offering practical advice to people travelling on holiday or business in Europe. It tells you what documents to take (passport, driving license, car insurance, European health insurance card etc), what currency you’ll need, the amount of alcohol and cigarettes you are allowed to take, phone info, water quality for bathers and details of how to take your pet with you. The emergency phone number for all of Europe is 112, if you have any difficulties.

Dear French News,
I wonder if any of your readers have found the same problem as us in reclaiming overpaid tax from the UK with the FD5 form.
There’s no problem in filling it in and giving it to the French tax authorities, but after that, it seems to disappear into a black hole.We have now been waiting over eight months to get back tax from the UK that we should not be paying on a small pension. Our neighbours seem to be suffering from the same problem. Even letters to our MP and Euro MP don’t seem to have achieved any result.

Sir/Madam,
I would be interested to hear if anybody else has come across the response of the French authorities to my wife’s application to take French citizenship. She applied over 12 months ago, to demonstrate her desire to fully integrate into French society and to vote in the parliamentary and presidential elections.
