The village of Martigné-Ferchaud, between Rennes and Angers, has pulled out all the stops for this year’s Étincelles Aquatiques, an open-air fantasy show, from August 11 to 14. With 250 actors and the help of nearly 1,000 volunteers, this 14th year promises a magical blend of fireworks, music and poetry, with the backdrop of the Étang de la Forge lake.

Almost the entire tourist trade along the Emerald Coast – hotels, restaurants, campsites, zoos, boutiques, tour operators and local ferries – are beginning to panic about the season, which has so far been catastrophic.
“What’s lost is lost,” bewailed a Dinard hôtelier. “Even if we do well in August, we usually only count on the first two weeks to reach 100% occupation. It then slowly runs down as holidaymakers start going back home.”

This year’s all-Celtic bash in Lorient, the ‘Year of Scotland’, looks like it might be even bigger and louder than ever, with 600,000 festival-goers and 4,500 performers from every Celtic horizon.
The Festival Interceltique has already set the record as the world’s biggest gathering of Celts. For the 37th time, the town will be awhirl for ten days (and nights) with kilts beerdrinking and all breeds of bagpipe, an epicentre of the Celtic revival, with musicians, singers, dancers and writers from Ireland, Scotland, Asturia, Brittany, Galicia, Cornwall, Wales, the Isle of Man, Acadia and Australia.

More than 100,000 points were subtracted and 679 licences were suspended in Ille-et-Vilaine last year. The local branch of the motorists’ association 40 Millions d’Automobilistes has been pressuring local politicians to take a closer look at the way automatic speed checks and radars are mushrooming throughout the département.

Jersey and Ille-et-Vilaine exchange vows Print E-mail

An official protocol between the Island of Jersey and the council of Ille-et-Vilaine will be signed in Rennes next September.
The protocol will consolidate existing commercial, cultural and educational links. One of its main aims to monitor more closely air and sea transport between the département and the island.
