It’s late afternoon, the last Friday in September. Across the vine clad slopes of Menetou-Salon, and beyond the old forest of Henrichemont. The air in La Borne is tinged with the reassuring smell of wood smoke. Friendly fires burn in hearths as the first autumn chill bites.

As colourful as the countryside it passes through, the Vézère Festival in the Corrèze has been presenting some class performers for the last 27 years. Isabelle de Lasteyrie du Saillant, the festival’s artistic director, says: “This year’s festival is a real treat for everyone. Each year we try to make the programmes a musical discovery by bringing quality artists to historic and beautiful surroundings.”

Nicolas Lenfant is fastestablishing himself as a photographer with a difference. Exploring black and white photography, he’s also fascinated by horses. These are not classic horse shots, nor Stubbs-inspired, portrait-styled exercises in equestrian photography. These are more arty pieces photographed from odd angles whereby the animal is often seen distorted and larger than life.
