Sylvie Mathis talks to foreign players at SCA Albi, a top-14 rugby club in the Tarn, about the world cup.

Daniel Farani from New
Zealand, # 8 loose forward:
“In the quarters, I see
Australia vs England, with
Australia winning. Then I
see NZ vs Argentina, with
NZ winning. Then South
Africa vs Wales with South
Africa winning. Finally I see
France vs Scotland with
France winning.
In the semi-finals, I see:
Australia vs NZ and South
Africa vs France. My
prognoses for the final are
NZ beating South Africa,
18–12.”

Who’s your best bet in the Rugby World Cup?
French resident, rugby coach and journalist Jon Walker plants a few ideas…
How does your rugby
pitch grow; with Irish
shamrocks, Welsh fleurs-delis,
Scottish thistles, Japanese
chrysanthemums and Fijian
palms all in a row? And
strutting the greensward,
English lions, French
cockerels, South African
springboks, New Zealand
kiwis, Australian wallabies
and Argentine pumas?

Twenty-odd years ago – maybe even 30 years, already! – it
was the Japanese who were accused of copying all
manner of things Occidental. Now, of course, the Chinese
have the finger pointed at them while all along it was the
French who were the past masters.

The horsey world has been worried by a
virus (equine arthritis), which started in
Normandy and affects many mares and foals.
It has been seen in the Tarn-et-Garonne and
Landes and is extremely contagious. Luckily,
it doesn’t seem to affect horses in training
yet. There is no regulation for this disease as
for foot-and-mouth, but it is notifiable.
Thankfully, it is not a killer. The advice to all
who want to take part in any competition
(especially where there are large numbers of
horses) is to get your vet to give you a
certificate of health. One suggestoin for the
many riders who enjoy a hack in the country
is to stay at home for a month, but this is a
bit extreme.

Holidaymakers in the Normandy region
could have done worse than spend an
afternoon horseracing at the delightful tracks
of Deauville or Clairfontaine, where racing
takes place for most of August.
The meetings are highlighted by the
annual prestigious Deauville thoroughbred
horse sales, held this year from August 18
to 21. Recent stockmarket falls did not affect
the ‘Sport of Kings’ sales with total turnover
topping €38m and average price increase per
horse sold up from €81,344 last year to
€98,031, aided by the fact that this year’s
Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) first and
second, Longman and Literato, were both
bought at Deauville.
