The Le Mans 24-hour race
was dominated by the
diesel-powered prototypes
of Audi (the eventual
winners) and Peugeot.

Meanwhile, there was
the ‘race within the race’ –
the GT1 category whose
cars vaguely resemble
something one might
actually see on the road.
And for the second year
running the British Aston
Martin team brought their
DBR9 number 009 home
first in this class after a hard
fight against their American
rivals, the Corvettes. Car
number 007 finished fourth
in class, leaving one
wondering what James
Bond was doing, allowing a
Chevrolet to get in front of him!
Drivers of car 009, David Brabham, Antonio Garcia and Darren Turner were naturally
delighted with their win, which may promise even greater things for Le Mans 2009, and
certainly for this season’s European GT championship.

Jess Harrison, profiled here a few months back, has made
the French squad for the triathlon at the Beijing Olympics.
When we interrupted her to congratulate her she was at a
gruelling training session and her reactions were muddled. “I am
confused,” she said breathlessly. Overjoyed, we asked? “No,
not really, as I half expected to be in the squad. But my
family and friends seem thrilled so I expect I will be
when it all sinks in… but at the moment it is just train,
train, train.”
French News wishes her good luck in August.

Held on Friday 13 last month, the 2008
Classic British Welcome suffered no
superstitious influence. With Phil Hill as guest
of honour, and supported by the Ferrari
Owners’ Club, it turned out to be one of the
most successful events in its eight-year history.
The car park transformed into a virtual red
carpet of Maranello examples. Sixteen of
them took part in the annual ‘Grande Parade
des Pilotes’ in Le Mans city centre, while
another 30 were later escorted by gendarmes
on motorcycles for the two-hour spectacle.

Official guests arriving in their Ferraris
included Jack Sears (former Le Mans 24H
Race driver and today Chairman of the Ferrari
Owners’ Club), and Michael Salmon (with 13
Le Mans races to his credit) who arrived with
Jean Bloxham, not a Le Mans driver but very
evident in her time as an Aston Martin and
Jaguar Lady Racer. Gordon Spice (remember
Spice C2 cars?) dropped by to say hello while
we were downing a glass of champagne.

The 25,000 spectators who
came, with an air of
expectation, to Chantilly on
June 8 for the Prix de Diane
classic fillies race over 2,100
metres were not disappointed.
The traditional ladies day
saw an array of high fashion
and eye-catching hats which
added to the entertainment.
As the spectators tucked in to
their champagne picnic
lunches, the pre-race music
was aptly provided by
Thomas Dutronc, the son of
famous French singers
Jacques Dutronc and
Françoise Hardy.
