Kimberley Lovato enjoys a scoop of some of the finest ice cream in the Dordogne.
It is said that 75% of
what we perceive as
taste actually comes
from our sense of smell.
Scent is also linked to
memory. To confirm this, one
need only catch a whisper of a
favourite perfume to be
transported instantaneously
to a particular moment in
time. It is precisely this
emotional voyage that has
Dordogne-born and bred
ice cream maker Roland
Manouvrier scheming up
new and unorthodox
flavours, aptly called
parfums in French, like
goat cheese, parmesan,
Szechuan (SP) pepper,
foie gras and tomatobasil,
to name only a
few of his far-out
fancies.

I invested in a property in France, as a ‘buy to let’, for most of
the reasons outlined in your July article, but it has been a
financial disaster and a stressful situation. Despite taking
advice from a French notaire, my French accountant and estate
agent, I have a property occupied by a French family who have
not paid, do not and will not pay their rent.
Having consulted a huissier on numerous occasions, I am
told that the papers which have been submitted to the tribunal
to ask for expulsion cannot be dealt with until early October,
and then, because families cannot be evicted from November
to March, there is no chance of the house being returned to me
before next spring. Even then, the gendarmes will be have to
assist with the eviction and I will be liable for the cost of
moving their goods into storage.

Dear Editor,
Recent reporting in your organ has covered
unwelcome holidaying Brit quad bikers, nondomestic
double-barrelled speed freaks and now
expat off-road oafs (July edition). What on earth
did the poor old Dordogne do to deserve this
plague of vehicular vandals?

Where to go
Jacquou Parc
So, let’s say you like water rides,
your brother likes animals and
your sister is a fan of roller coasters.
How do your parents decide where to
bring the whole family to keep
everyone happy? The answer is
Jacquou Parc in Le Bugue-sur-Vézère,
a 10 hectare, three-in-one activity
wonderland where everyone in the
family will find something that
interests them.
