Margaux Lacombe visits the troglodytic Maison Forte de Reignac near Tursac

Aunique, unspoilt troglodytic fortress, the Château de Reignac is the latest heritage acquisition of Jean-Max Touron. It nicely completes the chronology of the cliff village of Roc Saint-Christophe and his two caves, the Roc de Cazelle at Les Eyzies and the Grotte du Sorcier at Saint-Cirq.
Touron bought the property (loosely termed a maison forte but strictly a reperium, as it belonged to a knight) three years ago from the city of Bordeaux. The site, near Tursac in the heart of the Périgord Noir, had been used for archeological research for some 20 years. The remains of five distinct periods of occupation, some uniquely unspoilt, span prehistory to the early 20th century.
Unlike most castles, this one is built in the cliff rather than on one, although there is a rudimentary stronghold at the top, the pinnacle of the visit with spectacular views over the Vézère valley. Those who are a little puffed after the climb can rest while watching a video (with English subtitles) about Reignac and other sites in the area.

Precision on the green Print E-mail

Scottish-born John Paton, resident of the Dordogne and ardent golf lover, swings a few rounds at Golf de Lolivarie and offers his perspective.

Golf de Lolivarie lies in a narrow valley just to the south of Siorac-en-Périgord. First opened as a nine-hole course in the 90s, it has more recently been extended and now offers the most challenging 18 holes in the Dordogne.
Narrow fairways between tree-covered slopes and tree-lined ditches require straight hitting and good distance control. The D51 valley road forms the course boundary and a scary ball magnet on four of the key driving holes. Fortunately the greens, which are fairly flat, have little protection from straight approach shots, which can be flown or rolled in.
