Aiming at “Keeping Ignorance Away” and “to show the
multiple facets of Muslims’ lives”, this collection of photos
from all over the world ranges from a wall painter in
Pennsylvania to an ice cream salesman in Cairo. Young girls in
Thailand smile for the camera, members of the ‘Allah Made Me
Funny’ comedy troupe pose for the snapshot and a traveller in
Argentina gives the universal symbol that everything’s all right – the thumbs-up. HijabMan, the
site’s creator, is not a professional journalist or photographer – he describes himself as “just an
American Muslim who travels, studies, and sells funky T-shirts along the way”. He wants
viewers to see Muslims in all shapes, sizes, and colours. Some have piercings, some wear the
veil, some are clean-shaven. These colourful images of Muslims in workday settings –
surrounded by family and friends, enjoying their lives, communing with a camel or watching the
Super Bowl – are a small step towards debunking the Muslim Monolith myth.
