The fishing town of Sète on the Mediterranean shores will be
transformed into a ski resort for the first weekend in March.
For the third year running, the port, population 43,000, will close
its roads and create a snow slope, covering the length of the rue
Paul Valéry and ending up in the mairie square.
The project is a collaboration between the Make-Romeu ski
resort in the Pyrénées-Orientales, which will loan the snow
machines, and local fishermen who will lay a bed of
ice as a foundation.
The town is confident it can handle the 1,000 people who will
ski in the town during the weekend. For just €2 all-comers can
hire equipment and ski down the normally-thronged lanes of the
hilly port.
There will be a special area in the square reserved for children,
where they can benefit from free instruction. Demonstrations will
show how rescue dogs find people buried by avalanches, and the
festivities will be accompanied by ski fare – tartiflettes, wine and
roast chestnuts.
