The British Volunteer Network
(22) With the slogan ‘Together we make a difference’ , this is a befriending and support service for the Anglophone community in times of illness and distress.
It is keen to set up a support group for mothers to be, and is asking if those who have given birth in France would be willing to be a ‘Volunteer Buddy’ and offer support? This could either be by email, telephone or in person.

Cancer Support France National
Cancer Support France (CSF), the charity founded in the Charente, hopes to establish daughter groups in other départements and is looking for people to help it develop in new areas. CSF offers a full support package including training to help new groups start up and in particular can offer input from the team in the Deux-Sèvres who established their group a year ago. Linda Shepherd reminds of the mission statement: “To support English-speaking people living in France people who are affected by cancer.”  If you would like to help, ring Paul Martin: 05 45 30 3178 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or Linda Shepherd: 05 45 29 08 93 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it CSF’s website has been rebuilt and the new version is now live: www.cancersupportfrance.info

Cancer Support France South Dordogne (24)
Established by and for English speaking people living in France, wherever their country of origin.
The Dordogne Sud branch of Cancer Support France (CSF) finally gained Association status in October 2007 and is now fully operational. This is the fourth Branch to be opened since CSF was established in 2002 at Benest, in the Charente; there are a further four branches opening within the next few months.
Eleven volunteers completed training in early December. CSF's volunteers are professionally trained under the ongoing guidance of Macmillan Cancer Support to listen and support those of us who have been diagnosed with cancer. The volunteers gain a sound working knowledge and understanding to help not only those directly affected with cancer - but members of the family or carers, who also often feel the need to talk to someone. Many of our volunteers have either experienced cancer personally, or have family members or friends who have.
The area covered by CSF-Dordogne Sud, stretches approximately from Brantome to Villeneuve-sur-Lot and from Castillon-la-Bataille to Belves. Listening support is available by telephone and contact can also be made via email. Visits to home or hospital by one of our volunteers can be arranged. We can also refer you to other recognised cancer organisations, which provide relevant information and help.
The principal aim of the charity is to offer fully trained volunteers to listen and be supportive. We endeavour to offer emotional help and, in so doing, to help alleviate the anxiety that cancer imposes on most aspects of our lives. Wherever you live in France, there is always someone at CSF at the end of a telephone, who is here to help.

70% of teachers on strike – maires resist child minding scheme.
The teachers are on strike in protest at the plan to “sedentarise” 3,000 of France’s 11,000 itinerant special needs teachers who operate Réseau d'Aide Spécialisée aux Élèves en Difficulté (RASED). Instead of moving from child to child, they will be based where there is a concentration of children with problems. Their pay will remain the same.
